Police praise gala day crowds

A SUCCESSFUL Lockerbie Gala Day saw a drop in arrests last Saturday.

Only two people were arrested, a drop from three last year and 13 in 2014.

Last year three teens aged between 17 and 14 were arrested for disorder and alcohol related offences.

In 2014 13 youths were arrested and an extra 14 police officers were drafted in to help after an incident saw CS spray deployed on a passenger filled bus.

Speaking about this year’s event, Lockerbie Inspector Gordon McKnight said: “I was delighted to see such a good turn out of people enjoying the day in Lockerbie and we worked closely with the organisers to help events flow smoothly.

“From a policing perspective it was a good day with only two arrested for abusive and disorderly behaviour, one in the afternoon and one later at night.

“Some warnings were administered early in the day and I was glad to see individuals heeded these and did not spoil things for others or themselves.”

Praising the local police force, Lockerbie Gala Committee secretary Amanda Kennedy said: “This year’s Lockerbie Gala was a massive success.

“Special thanks must go to our local police force, they did a brilliant job policing the event and they are a pleasure to work with every year.”
