A REMINDER has been given to the public to stay away from the unsafe Corrie Road woods in Lockerbie.

‘No entry’ signs have been erected there by Dumfries and Galloway Council but officials this week said they are aware that people are still going in.

And there are concerns about safety due to dangerous trees following Storm Eowyn in January.

The matter was raised at the Lockerbie and Lochmaben Common Good Committee on Wednesday.

Officer Steven Wyllie told councillors: “We had a not insignificant storm at the start of year which exacerbated the wood further.

“I would like to highlight again there’s no entry signs on that wood and it’s very clear that people should not be accessing that wood as some of the trees are still dangerous.

“I’m well aware there are a couple of instances where the wood has been used and that does give me concern.”

However, councillors at the meeting agreed to fund works to remove dangerous trees and maintain the woodland and fencing, which should improve the condition of the area.

Responding to a question about timescales, Mr Wyllie expressed hopes the project can be carried out as soon as possible, adding: “We have got a decision to undertake the work, have identified the contractor, so I will go back today and instruct the contractors.

“It will be as soon as possible ‘cos I’m well aware of the potential hazards and dangers in the woods.”

Meanwhile, Annandale North Cllr Gail Macgregor welcomed the report and update.

She said: “Some of the community have been a bit concerned about us taking trees out of this area but I think on safety grounds it’s been essential and ensuring people are safe if they are walking their dogs up in there.”
