THE search continues for a missing wallaby after a sighting near Lochmaben gave his owner new hope.
Wallace the wallaby fled his enclosure at the Crazy Critters Experience headquarters on Saturday and hasn’t been seen since, despite extensive searching by owner Luke Mitchell and his team, as well as thermal drones and the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team.
It is believed that Wallace may have disappeared after a group of dog walkers entered the field where he was kept late on Friday night.
A distraught Luke said earlier this week: “Witnesses have said that there was a group of at least four dogs that have come into the premises at 9 pm Friday night, they had noticed them as they were barking rather loud.
“Wallace was then possibly spotted between 9 pm and 10 pm outside Euro-route Recovery by a passer by.
“Can I please state: letting your dogs loose in any business premises is unacceptable, let alone a premises with livestock such as cows, sheep etc. even if they didn’t know about the enclosure. Further to this, it is apparently a regular occurrence in the later evenings.”
He added: “I have been very accommodating allowing the public to pop in and see the cows etc. as it has become a popular stop to see them. However, if this continues full restrictions will be put around the premises preventing any unauthorised access.”
The search for Wallace continued throughout the week with the help of residents and two thermal drones, unfortunately the wallaby has evaded searchers so far.
But after a possible sighting yesterday near Lochmaben, Luke isn’t giving up and has put out a call for scent trained/search dogs in the hope of finally tracking down his beloved wallaby.
He added: “We investigated every pile of fermenting grass, squirrel, bird of prey, rabbit and even cow pat without a single sighting of him.
“Our best guess is he is in a shed or hidden underneath something blocking thermal imaging.”
