Wartime exhibition still on at museum
THERE’S still time to see Moffat Museum’s special exhibition as the summer season draws to a close.
The exhibition ‘80 Years On – WW2 in Moffat’ has proved to be extremely popular, with both residents and visitors to the town.
Any notion of the town being a sleepy backwater during the war years is quickly dispelled as people learn of Moffat’s key role as a designated ‘battle school’, with the town full of soldiers and their equipment. The hills around the town being used for live firing exercises and paratroopers preparing for their role in the D Day landings.
It also looks at the impact of the war on everyday life in Moffat – rationing, evacuees, living with the black-out and celebrating weddings.
Graeme Campbell, chair of the museum’s board of trustees, is delighted with visitors’ response to the displays and hopes that more people will visit the museum before it closes for the winter. He said:
“We’ve been delighted with the number of local people who have talked with us about their wartime recollections or shared family information and much of this is now included in our expanding display. These stories will now be part of our permanent archive and available for generations to come.”
The museum is open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday afternoon and Monday until Saturday October 25.
