A FUNDRAISER to restore Lochmaben’s war memorial continues to gain momentum.

A group of eight trustees was created earlier in the year to oversee the restoration of the award-winning memorial which has has been affected by weathering and general wear.

The total cost of the restoration is estimated to be £8000, which will be raised through a combination of donations and grant funding.

Many in the royal burgh have already pledged their support, much to the delight of trustee Carol Rogerson, who this week said: “We understand that it may appear there has been little visible progress recently. However, a significant amount of work has been taking place behind the scenes. This is because the project relies on a number of funding sources, which can take time to secure and coordinate.

“The work required is essential maintenance, cleaning, repairs, restoration of inscriptions, refurbishment of gates and hard landscaping immediately around the granite plinth.

“The plants surrounding the memorial are no longer supplied by Dumfries and Galloway Council so annual provision will need to be allowed for this.”

Looking ahead, the trust will be applying for grant funding and hosting a number of fundraising, events such as a race night, quiz and tea dance.

Carol and her fellow trustees hope to have the work completed by Remembrance Sunday this year.

She added: “We’re still finding our way but we’ve got a good group of people who are as enthusiastic about the project as I am, and the response we’ve had from the community so far has been really supportive.

“We would like to thank everyone who has generously donated towards the restoration of the war memorial so far. Your support is greatly appreciated and is already helping us take important steps towards preserving this important part of the Burgh’s history.”
