PEOPLE in the region were being asked to give generously to help send comforts to the troops in WWII, as this poster from the time shows.

The Duchess of Buccleuch’s Comfort Fund was appealing for knitted items to “mitigate the rigours of winter campaigning and the never ceasing watch and ward of our coasts in all weathers”.

The slogan was “Knit all day, knit all night, keep the forces fit to fight”.
