CONTROVERSIAL plans to introduce a tourist tax could spell disaster for many businesses in Dumfries and Galloway.

That was the warning this week from Finlay Carson MSP.

He fears it would pose a serious threat especially in rural areas like his constituency and would not be viable.

The Galloway and West Dumfries MSP voiced his concerns after meeting with a wide spectrum of local businesses and Dumfries and Galloway MP John Cooper last week - pictured above.

Mr Carson said: “From our discussions, it’s clear this could be the final straw for many of the industry, with far-reaching consequences for local high streets, employment and the broader economy.

“It was encouraging to see the unity among all the businesses represented, standing together in opposition to this levy.

“The danger is that this is just another tax with businesses being the collection agents – another administrative burden not wanted by owners of campsites, B&Bs, hotels and local businesses.”

Legislation giving councils’ powers to impose a levy on overnight stays has already been passed by the Scottish Government.

Under the plan, local authorities will be able to impose a charge on those staying in hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation, self-catering accommodation as well as campsites and caravan parks.

However Ministers have previously said motorhomes would not be included, despite demands from areas affected by wild camping.

But Mr Carson is encouraging local businesses to voice their opposition and highlight the potential damage to them, jobs and visitor numbers.

He added: “After all, why would tourists chose to pay an extra per cent per cent to visit Dumfries and Galloway when neighbouring areas, like Cumbria and South Ayrshire, have already ruled out such a levy."
