UV eye awareness raised
OPTOMETRIST Kieran McGrath, at Kidner Opticians in High Street, Annan is urging people to think beyond protecting their skin in the summer and take steps to safeguard their eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Research has linked prolonged UV exposure to a range of eye health issues, including cataracts and damage to the delicate tissue surrounding the eye.
To mark UV Awareness Month, which is held throughout July, Keiran is advising people to wear sunglasses that are marked with a UV400 rating, that provide 99-100% UVA and UVB protection.
He said: “Many people are diligent about protecting their skin from the sun but overlook the impact UV radiation can have on their eyes. UV damage accumulates over time, so protecting your eyes isn't just important during holidays abroad.
“Choosing sunglasses with proper UV protection is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce your risk of long-term eye problems."
