CALLS are growing in Lockerbie for CCTV to be installed in McJerrow Park as a matter of urgency.

It comes amid frustration locally at low-level nuisance, graffiti and vandalism in the park, especially in regards to newly installed play equipment.

More damage was reported at the weekend, this time of the Herries fencing.

And it sparked outrage on social media among residents, with some saying they now avoid the area.

Former community council chair Jan Carnochan said: “Why? They cry out for new things then just ruin it!

“Money is spent on new things but they just ruin it, like someone mentioned it’s just an eyesore of a place now.”

Agreeing, Marion Good said: “What is the answer? It’s beyond me why kids want to wreck things that are for them, it absolutely defies belief.

“CCTV wouldn’t stop them if they’re that ignorant but it could identify the culprits.”

Others described it as disgraceful and disrespectful and called on parents to take greater responsibility for their children, while there were also calls for more police patrols in the area.

Meanwhile, Annandale North Cllr Lynne Davis got in touch with officials for an update on the CCTV plans.

She reported back that officials are also aware of the vandalism taking place within the park and agreed “It really is disappointing to see.”

They are liaising with the radio maintenance unit who are assisting with the CCTV installation and the increased urgency has been outlined. Further information will be shared when it’s available.
