Transport hubs work begins
CONSTRUCTION has begun on six multi-modal transport hubs in Galloway which will bring new active and sustainable transport options to communities. Located in Dalbeattie, Whithorn, Stranraer, Gatehouse of Fleet, Castle Douglas and Newton Stewart each hub will offer low-carbon alternatives to private car travel such as e-bike hire, electric car club vehicles, secure cycle storage, public EV charging points and cycle repair stations. They will also connect with local bus and rail services to support more joined-up journeys, with features including bus waiting areas and real time passenger information screens. Each hub is being delivered by Dumfries and Galloway Council as part of £13.8 million investment from the UK Government, with a further £1.8 million from Transport Scotland. The start of construction was marked by a launch event last Wednesday in Newton Stewart attended by council leader Stephen Thompson, alongside other elected members and contractor Galliford Try. Cllr Thompson commented: “It is good to see construction now underway on these transformative transport hubs. They will make it easier for people to choose more active ways to travel - whether that’s walking, wheeling, cycling or using public transport - and will help reduce our reliance on high-emission vehicles. “This is a significant step forward in our ambition to create a more connected, sustainable region, and for Dumfries and Galloway to deliver practical solutions that benefit both people and the planet.”
