Town gets involved with Moffat Ram milestone
PREPARATIONS to mark the 150th anniversary of the Moffat Ram are well underway, with pupils at the Academy lending a hand.
The centrepiece for the town’s celebrations will be in the form of a large ram puppet which will be part of the parade at the Christmas Lights Festival in November.
And written on its fleece will be memories collected from townsfolk and visitors, all saying what the ram means to them.
The project is being led by artist Fiona Wilson on behalf of the Moffat Promotions Group.
Group chair Linnhe Cringean said: “We’re very pleased to say that the school have been very active in the preparations for the anniversary, the art department students have been working on their own versions of the fountain, which will be on display in the library. The students have been incredibly enthusiastic, we’ve had to purchase more clay for them to create with.
“We ourselves are currently working on a commemorative brochure with a number of pictures both old and new and the history of the ram. This will also include words to a song that has been specially written for the occasion by Erin Bullard that everyone will be able to join in with at the festival.”

Meanwhile, Mrs Martin’s National 5 Creative Industries class has been helping prepare the fleece. Linnhe explained: “For part of the course, the pupils get hands on experience in a variety of creative industries and one of them is a community art project, so when Fiona came to us asking if we’d like to be involved, it was perfect.
“We’ve been preparing the fabric for a few weeks now, and they’ve all done a great job so far. A few of them have made their own rams out of clay which will go on display during the festival, so it’s been a really good hands on thing for them.”
