Tourist tax reaction

READERS have been given their views on the proposed tourist tax being considered by councillors this week. Peter Barlow was in the minority saying he thinks it 'sounds like a good idea'. Against the idea was Louise Griffiths, who said: "Who would you class as a visitor? The area needs visitors, it actually needs more things to do to attract them. "Money raised wouldn't be spent on local amenities or the road so what's the point?" Stephen Hamilton also thinks it's a bad idea, saying: "The area doesn't get too many tourists anyway, adding a tax to tourists would just make them go somewhere else." Elaine King was "definitely no" too, while John Geddes said: "Communities need visitors to spend capital, if you do this disaster, "We will reap what is sown, visitors won't come."
