Thirty years of Dumfries U3A

CELEBRATIONS are in hand at the Dumfries branch of the U3a, to mark its official 30th anniversary.

Part of the international U3a movement, it is aimed at those who are not working full time but who want to keep body and brain active by meeting new people; sharing interests with like-minded folk; or, learning something new.

Their motto is ‘learn, laugh, live’.

And the Dumfries group is thriving with over 250 members coming from around the area, including Sanquhar, Thornhill, Moffat, Lockerbie, Castle Douglas and Annan.

There’s something for all tastes and they enjoy monthly events, such as recent talks on the perils and pitfalls of opening your garden to the public; travels in Antarctica; and the Threave Landscape Restoration Project.

Members also enjoy access to almost 40 different interest groups meeting either monthly or fortnightly, ranging from walking, kayaking, and table tennis, to art, photography, craft or sewing. There’s also Scrabble, writing, etymology, genealogy, history and mahjong.

Above all, many really enjoy the opportunity to meet new people and socialise.

U3a welcomes new members who can attend two meetings before joining.

To find out what’s going on, go to the branch website at dumfries.u3asite.uk and to find out more, and arrange to attend, contact treasurer Kathleen Simpson by email at [email protected].
