The Archaeology of the Solway

THE Archaeology of the Solway is the title of a talk by Dumfries and Galloway county archaeologist Andy Nicholson at Dumfries Museum tomorrow night, May 14.

He will give a quick chronological romp, from Mesolithic forests at Powfoot through to 20th century salmon nets, showing the variety of archaeology. Late Prehistoric (coastal forts and settlements, Lochmabenstone), Romans (Lantonside, Priestside, Ward Law), Early Medieval (Rockcliffe, Gatehouse, island churches), Vikings (place names, trade), Medieval (Caerlaverock harbour, coastal castles), Post Medieval harbours (Annan, Kingholm, emigres at Carsethorn), Solway Viaduct, 20th century military.

It’s organised as part of Dumfries Museum’s current exhibition which focuses on the sea.

No need to book, free to attend, starts at 7 pm.
