Sukie stars in new children’s book
A RESCUE cat fostered in Dumfries has has inspired a new children’s book.
Author Jan Falconer is launched her debut book ‘Sukie - Queen of Cats: I Choose My Family!’ this week inspired by her real-life cat, Sukie.
The book aim to raise awareness of the vital role foster families play to help young children understand Sukie’s journey and her real story, which reflects how many rescue cats are cared for today – not in central shelters, but by volunteer fosterers caring for cats in dedicated, purpose-built pens.
Jan explained: “Sukie didn’t come from a large shelter — she was cared for through a foster setting supported by volunteers. That’s something many people don’t realise. Behind every rescue cat is a network of volunteers giving their time, care and space.”

Cats Protection Central Dumfries operates through a network of dedicated volunteers who care for cats in purpose-built, council-licensed cat pens. These pens, supplied and maintained by the branch, are insulated and fully equipped to meet each cat’s needs — providing a safe, comfortable environment while they wait to be matched with a new home.
To support this work locally, Jan will donate 50p from every book sold during the first two weeks of launch to Cats Protection Central Dumfries.
Jan hopes Sukie’s story will not only encourage families to read together, but also help people better understand how rescue systems work and how they can get involved.
She added: “If Sukie’s story helps even one person consider fostering or supporting a rescue organisation, that would be incredibly meaningful.”
