Successful ice hockey camp

AN under 20s ice hockey camp in Dumfries has been declared a success.

The event was held in the town last weekend and GB head coach Tom Watkins said it was a “great start to the squad’s selection process”.
A total of 30 players attended the camp at the Dumfries Ice Bowl as they bid to make the final squad for the World Championship in France in December.
GB will play in Division 1B this this year after their promotion last season from Division 2A.
Watkins, who will lead the GB youngsters for the first time after taking over from Pete Russell, said: “It was a good competitive day on and off the ice.
“We had 30 players at the camp at the weekend but there were also some we have in mind who were unavailable to attend.
“The work ethic and intensity was high with all the guys hungry to be invited to our second trial in Nottingham on August 22.”
He added: “We’re still a long way from selecting our final squad, but it was a good opportunity to see these players in a high-performance environment.”
