Strong support for debut karate comp

A KARATE competition for children staged in the area for the first time has proved a success.

The first ever Annandale and Eskdale Active Schools Karate Competition was held at Elmvale Primary School in Annan.
The organisers said: “The event was well attended by pupils from the local area. There were some very good performances from the young competitors with Kirkpatrick Fleming Primary School coming out on top, winning the team event and the boys and girls individual events.”
With karate being a nominated sport in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, local instructor Alistair Mitchell, a former Scottish, British, European and World All Styles Champion, is introducing karate lessons into schools in the area with a view to identifying local talent for the future.
From the school-based classes, the students will be given access to local club training and competition which will lead, hopefully, to national and international success. Within the last two months, Alistair has taught karate taster sessions to over 350 primary and secondary pupils in the Annandale and Nithsdale area.
Active Schools co-ordinators have assisted Alistair at these taster sessions with a view to establishing after schools classes.
