CHILDREN and their families across Dumfries and Galloway can get a free copy of a new storybook designed to help them stay safe during storms.

Walter and Skye’s Stormy Night, created with award-winning author-illustrator Emily MacKenzie, follows two adventurous puppies through a wild night of wind and a power cut.

The wind howls, the lights flicker and heroic pups Walter and Skye start their new adventure as a storm blows in. The brother-and-sister duo face their fear of the dark and take on a power cut – thanks to a special storm kit they prepared before the weather turned.

It is full of simple, practical safety tips for parents and under fives and aims to helps everyone stay cosy and safe if the lights go out.

In partnership with Scottish Book Trust, more than 2000 free copies are being distributed to nurseries, libraries and playgroups in communities, including Dumfries and Galloway, with a free online version available.

Author Emily MacKenzie said: “I loved the idea of turning a wild, windy night into something exciting rather than scary. Walter and Skye are the kind of friends you’d want by your side when the lights go out - curious, brave and ready to spring into action!

“My hope is that children will remember the characters and when a storm comes along, SP Energy Networks makes them feel ready and safe.”
