Stepping back in time
OVER 50 people of all ages enjoyed themselves at a VE Day tea party at the McMillan Hall on Sunday afternoon.
It was organised by the Newton Stewart branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, and hosted by Stephon and Angie Bishop of Galloway Dance.
The hall was decked out in bunting for the occasion with plenty of tea, coffee and homemade cakes, along with music and dancing from the era. Some attendees wore clothes from the 1940s to really get in the mood.

The oldest attendee said: “It takes me right back to the first dance I ever went to, which was on VE Day in 1945. I was just 15.” Then she proceeded to get up on the dance floor to relive the experience.
The tea dance kicked off the celebratory events in Newton Stewart this week, with a short service of remembrance and celebration held in Dashwood Square on Thursday. Then on Saturday there were various events in the town and Newton Stewart Museum will have free entry from 11 am – 3 pm with a ‘1940’s Quiz Trail’ for families.
The Hive also hosted events, including a 1940s fancy dress competition, refreshments and quiz. Back at the McMillan Hall there was a VE Day living quiz immersive experience for groups.
