A NEW local approach to supporting missing people and their families has been launched across Dumfries and Galloway. The project is strengthening how agencies work together to prevent people from going missing, and to respond quickly and compassionately when they do. And it is highlighting two important tools that families and carers can get from the Police Scotland website and use to help protect vulnerable individuals: * The Herbert Protocol – for people living with dementia. This is a form that captures vital information such as routines, medical needs and a recent photo, helping police respond swiftly if someone goes missing. * The Philomena Protocol – for children and young people at risk, particularly those in care or with complex needs. This form ensures police have the right information from the outset, developed in partnership with the young person and their carers. Hamish McGhie, chair of the Dumfries and Galloway Public Protection Partnership, said: “When someone goes missing, every second counts. This updated protocol reflects our shared commitment to protecting the most vulnerable people in our communities. By working together, and by encouraging families and carers to use tools like the Herbert and Philomena Protocols, we can make a real difference in how we prevent, respond to and support those affected by missing person incidents. “We also want to acknowledge the vital role played by private care providers in supporting this work, and to thank the Missing People charity for their expertise in helping to develop the protocol. Their support services remain a valuable resource for families and carers.”
