Smoking support carries on

SUPPORT with quitting smoking continues to be offered locally through the pandemic, with 156 new referrals since lockdown.

The NHS Quit Your Way team are continuing to support smokers throughout Dumfries and Galloway with their ongoing and new quit attempts during the pandemic. The majority of those seeking help since March 23 have been self referrals, with concerns relating to coronavirus a deciding factor for many.

A spokesman said: “Some people are worried about their health and that of their family whilst others whose income is precarious can no longer afford to smoke.

“The World Health Organisation and ASH Scotland advise that the risk of developing more severe Covid-19 symptoms for smokers (and those exposed to second hand smoke) is greater in part because of the likelihood of an already underlying respiratory weakness. The repetitive hand to mouth movement of smoking also provides an easy route of entry for the virus.”

In addition, they say smokers are more likely to fall into the shielding category and either cannot go out at all or have been restricting their movement and do not want to have to go out regularly to buy cigarettes. The spokesman added: “As a long established team we recognise that now more than ever before it is important that smokers receive the behavioural and pharmacotherapy support they need to stop.”

However, due to restrictions they have stopped face to face surveys and are instead contacting clients by phone and virtual appointments. Prescriptions can still be made for nicotine replacement therapy and people’s progress is closely monitored, as well as liaising with GPs about Varenicline (Champix) and Buproprion (Zyban) options, which require enhanced monitoring.

“Clients are very grateful for our calls in these testing times, those who are shielding are very isolated and have been engaging enthusiastically with the service,” added the spokesman.

A text messaging service, Florence, is also proving popular with users receiving motivational and reminder messages during their quit journey.

Meanwhile, The Quit Your Way Service is working to formalise a Covid-19 shared care model with community pharmacy to deliver their cessation services. To speak to the team about quitting smoking, even if you don’t want to stop right now, or to receive an information pack, call 0845 602 6861 or 07736 955 211, or email – [email protected].
