A FORMER Annan Academy pupil is leading a nationwide study into
Dr Phyllis Murphie, MSc, PhD, is part of the research team for the AWAKE Check UK study.
Described as a 'landmark project', it will provide the first nationwide estimate of sleep apnoea and insomnia prevalence, shining a spotlight on two of the UK’s most under diagnosed health conditions.
Over 1000 adults have already taken part in the online study, but the research team hope to reach 5000 by April.

And Dr Murphie is appealing to anyone in Dumfries and Galloway who thinks they might suffer from either or both conditions to take part and share their experiences.
A website has been set up to gather response and it features Awake Check, a free, quick and anonymous way, to get a sleep apnoea and insomnia risk check.
Sleep apnoea is when you repeatedly stop breathing while you sleep leading to long term health issues. It's due to upper airway soft tissue collapse and can lead to daytime sleepiness, increased cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risks, metabolic issues, diabetes, memory problems and mental health issues.
Meanwhile, insomnia is the inability to fall or stay asleep.
The experts say that one in four UK adults may have sleep apnoea and up to 50 per cent of people report insomnia symptoms, although only a small group meet the criteria for insomnia disorder.
Chronic insomnia symptoms may include difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings, early morning waking and non-refreshing sleep.
The website to find out more, and take part, is awakecheck.co.uk
Dr Murphie worked as a respiratory nurse consultant for NHS Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland until June 2020. She is now an independent respiratory nurse consultant/PhD.
