OVER 16,000 water bottles on average are filled at the region's water taps every month, according to the latest figures. The iconic blue Scottish Water taps in various locations throughout Dumfries and Galloway have saved the equivalent of 16,787 plastic bottles a month since they were installed in 2018. Connected directly to the public water system, the region's eight taps make up part of a network of 132 taps across Scotland, with more continuing to be rolled out at key locations. South of Scotland MSP Emma Harper has praised the scheme calling it 'an immense achievement', stating it was only possible because the Scottish Government kept Scotland’s water in public ownership. She said: “The iconic blue Scottish Water taps are saving on average 16,787 plastic water bottles a month here in Dumfries & Galloway, with over 20 million bottles saved since the scheme was introduced in 2018, an immense achievement. “These taps benefit everyone – both local people and visitors who are coming to Scotland to experience some of our most iconic destinations. “Public ownership of our water ensures lower bills, a better service and most importantly improved access to water through schemes like the top up taps.”
