Scottish Water eyeing up council land

SCOTTISH Water is aiming to snap up a piece of council-owned land in a village near to Dumfries.

The water authority has expressed an interest in purchasing the 843 sq metre plot of open rough scrubland on the banks of the River Nith at Glencaple Quay.

The land would then be used to replace the existing septic tank located next to Caerlaverock Tearoom and shop.

Dumfries and Galloway Council declared this piece of land surplus to requirements two months ago, and agreed to progress towards a sale.

However, as this location is considered Common Good Land, community groups must be consulted first. Caerlaverock Community Association, Barbour Hall Committee, and Caerlaverock Estate have all been invited to share their views.

The potential sale will be discussed at Dumfries Common Good Fund Sub Committee next Wednesday.

Councillors will also be invited to put forward names of other local community groups that may have interest in the surplus land.

A report, due to be tabled at next week’s committee, states: “Should members identify further groups who may have interest in the property, officers from property, estates and programmes will engage with these groups and feed back to Dumfries Common Good Fund Sub Committee.

“Should no representations be received, the process of disposing of this land by negotiated sale will continue to Scottish Water to replace the existing septic tank.”
