REMAINS of two women found near Moffat have finally been laid to rest, after 90 years.

The bodies of Isabella Ruxton and Mary Rogerson were found in a ravine outside the town after being killed in Lancaster in 1935.

The case broke new ground in forensic science when Edinburgh University helped build evidence against Dr Buck Ruxton, who was later hanged for both murders.

However, the two women’s remains were discovered in its archive last year, stored in boxes in a vault alongside evidence from the case. The assumption is that they were retained for further medical research. Edinburgh University then launched an appeal to trace Isabella and Mary’s relatives in order to return them to their families.

Now an update has been given that both women have finally, and successfully, been laid to rest.

An Edinburgh University spokesperson said: “After an appeal to get in contact with the relatives of Isabella Ruxton and Mary Jane Robertson, the women’s remains have now been laid to rest in line with their respective families’ wishes.

“We would like to thank everyone involved in this sensitive project, as well as members of the public who got in touch.”
