MACHARS rowers completed an epic voyage from the Isle of Whithorn to the Isle of Man raising much needed funds for their club.

Members of Wigtown Bay Coastal Rowing Club were finally able to set sail in the early hours of Saturday morning for their 52-mile round trip, testing the crews’ endurance over one of the most demanding stretches of water.

Funds raised from the challenge will go directly towards sustaining the club helping to cover essential equipment, boat maintenance, safety training and ensuring rowing remains accessible to people of all ages and abilities in the area.

The crew landed at the south shore in Ramsey, greeted by crews from the Laxey Coastal Rowing Club and the Manx Sailing and Cruising club. They also exchanged flags with representatives from the Unesco Biosphere Isle of Man.

A club spokesperson said: “Huge thanks to the wonderful people from Unesco Biosphere Isle of Man and Biosphere Isle of Man - Youth Network who gave us a heroes’ welcome on Saturday when we arrived at Ramsey south shore following the first leg of our double marathon rowing challenge.

“Warm smiles, cheers and words of encouragement were offered to our crew, along with hot drinks and biscuits, all gratefully received.”

After a quick pit stop and swapping crews, the Isle of Whithorn outfit took to the water once more for their return journey, arriving back in the Machars just before 10 pm.

In total the club raised £3274.

Reflecting on the experience, club chairman John Mcguire - who coxed the crews on both legs, added: “I couldn’t be more proud of the rowers who have shown amazing dedication training in all sorts of horrendous weather, you were all amazing each and everyone of you. I’d like to thank Newton Stewart sub aqua club for the use of their rib crewed by Chris, Richard and Karen, Baz, Jani and Gibby in Manta Ray, Phil and Sheena aboard Modestine, we couldn’t have done it without you. Special thanks to Alan Kneen and the rowers from Laxey Rowing Club who went above and beyond to welcome us.

“A big thank you to everyone of you who waited in the cold to greet us back to the Isle, it was lovely to see you all there. To all our sponsors and donors, your kindness is very much appreciated.”
