A SMALL ceremony was held in Dumfries last week to mark the 110th anniversary of the death of munitions worker Christina Caldow.

She died on December 8 due to poisoning from the 'dope' varnish she had been painting onto aeroplanes at the Arrol Johnston factory at Heathhall.

Her name is in the Scottish National War Memorial and, through the efforts of the Dumfries and Maxwelltown Royal British Legion, her name is also inscribed on the Maxwelltown war memorial.

Engineering historian Nina Baker OBE, who runs the Women in Engineering History blog, travelled to Dumfries from Glasgow last Thursday morning to pay her respects to Christina.

She was joined at the war memorial by legion members as she lay a yellow wreath, the colour of munitions workers.
