Remedial works laid out in report
MORE information has been revealed about the remedial works that are required urgently to preserve Lochmaben War Memorial.
As reported last week, there have been some signs of damage on and around the structure.
And now a report on the issue has been produced for next Wednesday’s meeting of Lockerbie and Lochmaben common good fund sub committee.
It reads: “In early 2025, concerns were highlighted about the four large trees that sit directly at the back of the war memorial.
“The roots have been seen coming through the granite gravel area that surrounds the structure.
“The granite plinth joints have also shown signs of separation due to the tree roots spreading. There have also been signs of damage to the raised beds, caused by the trees.
“Council officers instructed both a structural engineer and a tree specialist to investigate the concerns.
“The tree specialist has indicated they are now at height whereby there is a likelihood that this species in very strong winds/storms could snap off and therefore consideration should be given to removing them.”
Officials are hoping to receive £1376 from the common good fund to put towards the work, which has an overall cost of £3000.
And they have warned action is needed to prevent any further damage at the war memorial site.
The report adds: “This species of tree is susceptible to splitting as they grow even taller, and there is concern that the roots will be shallow so making them more likely to be blown down in strong winds.
“Other options have been considered and community engagement, in partnership with Lochmaben Community Council, will be undertaken before any action is taken.
“This will include consideration for planting trees elsewhere in the town, and would anything be desired by the community to go in their place.
“The intention would be to action this before the winter storm season approaches.”
