Refresh plans for war statue
PLANS are being made to clean up the Dumfries War Memorial.
The monument, which stands on the pavement to the front of St John’s Scottish Episcopal Church, is suffering with a build-up of dirt, algae and lichen in places.
So Dumfries and Galloway Council are proposing to give it a wash with water and brushes. No chemicals will be used and the work would be carried out by experienced contractors.
Planning officer Lindsey Little said: “The memorial would be left looking clean, but not as new, as there would be residual patina. The lettering is in good order and the paint should not be affected unduly.”
The memorial was erected in 1922 and depicts the figure of a Scottish solider, standing on a square granite plinth, which has a pillar on each corner and steps to the base. Names are inscribed on both the plinth and the steps.”
Checks have found that it appears to be structurally in good order, the stone is in good condition, showing little weathering with all lettering still clearly visible.
