MARK your calendars as Dumfries Musical Theatre Company (DMTC) counts down to its latest production, Calendar Girls.

Inspired by the 2003 film, this musical retelling written by Take That frontman Gary Barlow with Tim Firth tells the heart-warming true story of a group of Women’s Institute members who posed nude in a calendar which raised millions for blood cancer charities.

In DMTC’s production, Ren Forteath plays Annie, whose life is turned upside down when her husband John, played by Neil Webster, is diagnosed with cancer and dies shortly afterwards. In an attempt to give Annie a positive focus, her best friend, florist Chris played by Sharron Harper, embarks upon a creative mission to fundraise for a visitors’ sofa for the local hospital by posing for a nude calendar.

Despite initial scepticism, Chris soon persuades fellow members of the Knapely branch of the Women’s Institute to join in. Among these are rebellious church organist Cora played by Rhona Davidson; Heather Brown as glamorous ex-air hostess Celia, and the usually shy and compliant Ruth played by Alison Donnelly. They are joined by DMTC veteran Nina Rennie as Jessie the outspoken, no-nonsense elder stateswoman of the WI.

What starts as a wayward fundraising idea soon becomes a tale of personal growth and challenge, and ultimately a celebration of love, friendship, resilience and female solidarity, all while honouring John’s memory.

Heading up the production is John McIntyre as director, with DMTC’s resident musical director, Nick Riley, and Star Murdy as choreographer.

Calendar Girls: The Musical is John’s first time directing for the company, and he’s excited for audiences to see the finished show, commenting: “Its been really exciting to see the characters develop throughout rehearsals and to sing our way through some very emotional and uplifting songs. A highlight for me has been rehearsing the songs with the experienced principals and chorus to make a big sound and, of course, alongside our traditional Yorkshire marching band, something I’m sure will give the audiences a warm feeling for a long time.

“We’ve got some surprises in store for you and some very recognisable village characters, a few pints will be supped and multiple cups of Yorkshire Tea drank.

“Make sure to get your tickets to see and hear our excellent cast, band and crew perform a wonderful musical that will leave you feeling happy about what a community can do when they pull together.”

  • Calendar Girls: The Musical is at the Theatre Royal in Dumfries from Saturday May 16 to Saturday May 23, with a matinee performance on Sunday May 17 at 2.30 pm. The show has a 12A guidance rating.
