Publican praised for Covid community work

A HOTELIER from Lockerbie has been recognised for his work during the Covid pandemic.

Stephen Montgomery, of the Townhead Hotel, received a special commendation for outstanding industry leadership in the 2020 Scottish Hotel Awards.

He said: “It was a real surprise because I didn’t even realise what I was doing for Scotland’s licensed trade during Covid was being noticed.

“I was doing it because I am passionate about it but it’s quite humbling to receive this in light of recent events.

“Being part of the hospitality sector is a great career, and rewarding in many ways, but challenging in others.

“Being involved in meetings with the Scottish Government, SDS, Hospitality Taskforce Recovery Group etc and giving advice and helping so many people in the worst hit sector of Covid has taught me so much.

“I have met and gained so many friendships, but most of all being able to help so many means more.”

During lockdown Stephen offered the use of his pub kitchen to help the Aberlour charity prepare and deliver meals to the vulnerable.

There was further success for the Townhead team as head chef Laura won the regional executive chef title for the South West of Scotland.

Furthermore, the Townhead scooped the Best Casual Dining Award for the whole of Scotland as well.
