AS peak rail fares were abolished across Scotland this week, MSP Emma Harper has welcomed the news. The announcement, confirmed by First Minister John Swinney, follows a successful pilot scheme and is expected to deliver significant savings for rail users across the country. The Scottish Government hopes the move will encourage more people to choose rail over car travel, supporting both economic recovery and climate targets. South Scotland MSP Emma Harper commented: “The abolition of peak rail fares is positive news for people in Dumfries and Galloway. It will help commuters who travel, even two or three days a week from Lockerbie to Glasgow or Dumfries to Glasgow and the return, as well as those who use the train from Stranraer to the central belt for shopping or day trips. “Making rail travel more affordable is a win for rural communities and for our environment and this change means passengers will pay the same fare regardless of the time of day or day of the week."
