Partial U-turn on school crossing welcomed
A DECISION to remove a school crossing patrol outside Dalbeattie Primary School has been partly reversed.
Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson has cautiously welcomed the decision from Dumfries and Galloway Council to retain a crossing patrol at the school during peak times. But, he insists serious concerns remain over child safety at lunchtime.
The MSP had previously condemned the council’s plan to fully remove the patrol, calling it “dangerous” and “potentially life-threatening.”
Following pressure from Mr Carson and concerned parents, the council has now reversed its decision to fully remove the patrol, confirming that a crossing patroller will remain in place at the start and end of the school day.
However, the lunchtime patrol will still be withdrawn from August, in line with other schools across the region.
Mr Carson said: “This partial U-turn is a step in the right direction and a clear acknowledgment that the original decision was flawed.
"However, I remain deeply concerned that the lunchtime patrol is still being removed. The risks to children don’t disappear at midday.
"I will continue to press the council to reconsider the lunchtime removal and ensure that every child can cross safely, no matter the time of day.”
