A DUMFRIES butcher has retained its title for the best haggis in the south-west.

Mogerleys Butchers secure the regional honours in the 2025 World Haggis Championship.

Owner Daniel West, 32, and his team at the Friars Vennel butchers returned to the bi-biennial showdown of some of the country’s finest haggis producers in Perth last weekend, where Daniel was confident his late Papa Gordon Little’s recipe would win over a whole new panel of judges.

Although Daniel couldn’t attend the awards due to illness, he was delighted that his papa’s recipe won again.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted to retain the title, I was ill in bed and couldn’t attend but the news about our win was the best medicine – it was terrific.

“This one was for Papa – he would have been so proud.”

Daniel took over the shop run by his Papa and then his uncle Gordon two years ago. And the one thing he wasn’t going to alter was the family haggis recipe – a closely guarded secret.

He continued: “We get online orders for our haggis from all over the country and sell around 200lbs a week: it proves very popular, so we decided not to mess with success.

“The only non-fan is Papa’s wife, Nana Rachael, who finds it too peppery. Apart from the pepper, the rest of the recipe is top secret!”

Going into this year’s competition as reigning south-west champion put added pressure on the Dumfries butcher and retaining that honour is something he’s extremely proud of.

“I will keep aiming higher and hopefully one day our haggis could be a world beater. For now, two years into owning the business, I’m just chuffed to have lifted the regional title twice already,” he added.
