Overweight children concerns for region
OVER a quarter of primary one pupils in Dumfries and Galloway are at risk of overweight and obesity, it has emerged.
New figures show concerns for 26.9 per cent of the wee ones, up from 23 per cent previously.
And it has sparked a commitment among health bosses to continue tackling unhealthy weight in childhood.
The latest data highlights a long-standing challenge for the region, with childhood weight closely linked to long-term physical, mental and social wellbeing.
Director of public health Valerie White yesterday said: “Every child has the right to grow up healthy, confident and well.
“These figures show that we still have work to do to ensure the environments around our children support good health.
“This remains a priority, and we will continue working closely with partners and communities across Dumfries and Galloway to address it.”
She acknowledged that families are facing real pressure, adding: “Rising food costs, especially for healthy staples, combined with rural access challenges, mean that healthier options are not equally available to everyone.
“We must work together to change that.”
