New support service for friends and family

A NEW support service has been launched for anyone in the region struggling with a loved one’s drug or alcohol use.

Being There is funded by the Dumfries and Galloway Alcohol and Drugs Partnership (ADP).

Described as a new and innovative service, it will offer a listening ear for friends and family members.

It is free, confidential and non-judgmental and aims to offer emotional support, help and practical advice.

Project leader Dr Angela Roberts said: “We are delighted to launch this new support service. It is not easy to live with someone’s problematic alcohol or drug use. However, it is easy for friends and family to feel overwhelmed by a loved one’s behaviour or isolated due to the stigma around drugs and alcohol. It is also easy to feel guilty and forget about their own needs.”

Jackie Davies, from the ADP added: “In commissioning this family support service, Dumfries and Galloway Alcohol and Drug Partnership hope that Being There will be a lifeline for those family members affected by someone else’s drinking and drug use.

“This is the first dedicated alcohol and drugs family support service funded by the ADP in Dumfries and Galloway which will provide advice and support for family members in their own right.”

Being There can help the parent, sibling, grandparent, child (over 18), partner, best friend of someone struggling with alcohol or drugs problems.

It can be reached by phone on 0333 8806950 or email [email protected].
