New owner sought for mausoleum
A NEW custodian is being sought for The Douglas Mausoleum in Castle Douglas. The town’s community council feel they can no longer ‘maintain ownership’, so they have put out a plea to individuals; heritage or charitable trusts; clan organisations or charities who may be interested in taking it on. The mausoleum is situated next to Kelton Parish Church, is Grade A listed, and was built in about 1820. It is the final burial place of the founder of Castle Douglas, Sir William Douglas, and over 20 other members of the Douglas family and other related persons. Its current ownership status has only just come to light after a member of the public flagged it up to Castle Douglas Community Council (CDCC). Further research by the group confirmed they were indeed the owners of the structure, much to their surprise. But members don’t feel they can continue and issued a statement, saying: “As the situation stands today, maintaining ownership of the Douglas Mausoleum by the CDCC is not a viable option. “Community councils are voluntary organisations, with limited funding, set up by statute by the local authority and run by residents to act on behalf of their area or town. That means our focus and commitment lie with the people and the town of Castle Douglas. “Moving forward, and in order that this architecturally and historically significant building has the focus and energies directed towards it that it deserves, the CDCC are seeking expressions of interest from any individuals; heritage/charitable trusts; clan organisations or charities who would like to enquire further about acquiring the mausoleum, mindful of the building and sensitive to its purpose.” The deadline for expressions is June 14 and thereafter any bid would be considered on its merits.
