Music tuition cuts criticised

SOUTH Scotland MSP Craig Hoy has condemned local authority moves to drop the instrumental music service, potentially resulting in tuition cuts in the region’s schools and wider communities.
Mr Hoy said: “I am roundly opposed to plans from SNP-run Dumfries and Galloway Council to scrap music tuition and urge councillors to reject these deeply damaging proposals.
“This will hit children from the poorest backgrounds hardest, many of whom are already stuck on waiting lists for instrumental access and will turn music lessons into a privilege only for families who can afford private tuition.
“It will also pile huge pressure on community music groups that already do so much to support our young people.
“I have raised this vital issue both with Dumfries and Galloway Council and the SNP Scottish Government, whose chronic underfunding of our region has left local services struggling for years.”
