URGENT clarity and further action is being called for on new bus timetables.

South Scotland SNP MSP Emma Harper wants SWestrans and Dumfries and Galloway Council to strengthen their response to the widespread disruption caused by Stagecoach’s withdrawal from the majority of the region’s bus network.

And she revealed there are still concerns locally regarding specific routes that include Kelloholm to Sanquhar, Stranraer and Wigtownshire.

Ms Harper said: “I have received a significant number of emails from constituents and parents expressing deep concern about the proposed changes to bus runs and the school transport.

“Parents in Kelloholm have told me their children will be arriving at Sanquhar Academy an hour early and leaving nearly an hour late after school. This is simply unacceptable.

“Public transport is a lifeline, not a luxury. It is vital that SWestrans and Dumfries and Galloway Council continue to do everything in their power to facilitate an optimal bus service—especially for those travelling to school, work, and hospital appointments.”

It has been confirmed that 45 long-term contracts have been awarded to local operators to deliver subsidised services, and that home-to-school transport will operate from the start of the new term.

But Ms Harper added: “I welcome the work that has been done by SWestrans, D&G Council and the new bus operators so far over the summer.

“In speaking on behalf of people in our communities, I know they must not be left stranded. Therefore, I am seeking urgent confirmation from SWestrans that every effort is being made to ensure continuity of service and to hear from the people where there are continued time scheduling deficits.”
