MPs to back Brexit deal

BOTH of the region's MPs will tonight back the Prime Minister's Brexit deal in the Westminster vote.

But Dumfries and Galloway politician Alister Jack – pictured below – says that he has reached his decision after ‘much deliberation.’

He has concluded the deal could deliver for all the UK without undermining the integrity of the Union.

Mr Jack said: “It is a pragmatic compromise that means we leave the political union, the customs union, the Common Fisheries Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy.

“It ends free movement and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice over the UK.

“It is also the deal that reflects the closeness of the referendum result by leaving the EU at the same time as protecting our jobs and economy.”

Having originally expressed reservations about the so-called Northern Ireland border backstop, he has now concluded that the controversial aspect of the deal would not undermine the integrity of the UK.

Mr Jack stressed that nothing in the withdrawal agreement would prevent the UK from ensuring unfettered access for goods moving from Northern Ireland to the rest of the UK internal market.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State for Scotland, and Dumfriesshire MP, David Mundell is also supporting Theresa May and has been urging his colleagues to do the same.

He said: “The Prime Minister’s deal is a product of tough negotiation.

“It will mean an orderly Brexit which takes us out of the Common Fisheries Policy, guarantees EU citizens’ rights, ensures the vital transition period that businesses need, and lays the foundations for negotiating our long-term future trading relationship with the EU.

It brings certainty, and that’s what the people I speak to want. I do not claim it is perfect – but it does achieve key objectives.”

Mr Mundell warned that not backing the deal means the UK risks crashing out of the EU without a deal, or we “drifting towards a situation where we fail to respect the referendum result to deliver Brexit”.

The vote takes place in the House of Commons at 7 pm, with the result expected by 8.30 pm.
