Mountaineering group tackle Kintail
LAST weekend 12 members of Dagmar Mountaineering Club headed north to the climbing mecca of Kintail.
Staying at Ratagan Youth Hostel, on the shore of Loch Duich – the target for the weekend, The Five Sisters of Kintail were clear to see.
Saturday morning dawned bright and clear as the group headed up the punishing climb to Bealach an Lapain.
Ignoring the occasional light flurries of snow, they turned west on the ridge, tackling its three munros, Sgurr na Ciste Dubhe, Sgurr na Carnach and the highest mountain of the day Sgurr Fhuaran at 1067m, all the while admiring the views across to the Isles of Skye, Eigg and Muck, before descending into Morvich after a long day on the hills. One party combined this trip with a traverse of the Three Brothers first, bringing their Munro count to an impressive six for the day.
Sunday’s weather could not have been more different with low cloud and light rain.
One party climbed the corbett behind the hostel, Sgurr Mhic Bharraich, whilst others drove round to the tiny hamlet of Arnisdale, on the shores of Loch Hourn, to tackle the munro, Beinn Sgritheall via its western ridge.
Those tired from the day before elected to take the small ferry from Glenelg to explore Kylerhea on Skye.
Dagmar Mountaineering Club, based in SW Scotland, has about 50 members and is an affiliate club of Mountaineering Scotland.
They meet monthly for day walks and hold five weekend meets throughout the year. New members are always welcome.
