DRIVERS heading south this weekend are being reminded of a second full closure of the M6.

A section of the motorway near Penrith will be shut from tonight until 5 am on Monday as Network Rail continues a bridge replacement project.

The new West Coast Main Line railway bridge will be installed over the motorway this weekend.

Diversions will be in place as a result for traffic, but motorists are being advised to postpone journeys if possible or avoid the area altogether.

Steve Mason, from National Highways, said: “For the forthcoming weekend we once again are urging anyone thinking of driving through this part of Cumbria to postpone their plans if possible. Anyone who does need to travel should check traffic and weather conditions before setting out and stick to the official diversions - or choose routes well away from the county.”
