MORE than 30 mobile masts, including one near Lockerbie, have been upgraded as part of a scheme to improve 4G coverage in rural areas.

The Shared Rural Network is a joint programme between the government and the UK’s mobile network operators EE, Virgin Media O2 and VodafoneThree to improve rural coverage across Britain.

A total of 33 mobile masts have been upgraded across Scotland, and up to 44 more new masts are planned for Scotland before January 2027.

Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander welcomed the news and said: “Better mobile connectivity is essential for driving economic growth in rural Scotland. Whether it’s guest houses welcoming visitors to enjoy our stunning landscapes, or village halls keeping communities together, this investment will help Scottish businesses thrive and families.”

Telecoms Minister Liz Lloyd added: “More of Britain’s rural communities are finally getting the connection they’ve been waiting for as we deck the hills with 4G coverage.”
