Major investment to drive Burns tourism in Dumfries
DUMFRIES has taken a significant step forward in realising its potential as a global destination for Robert Burns tourism. The town board is looking to appoint a dedicated Burns tourism partnership project manager to drive forward the ambition of the Burns Tourism Partnership. They will focus on delivering projects, strengthening collaboration and accelerating progress towards positioning Dumfries as a leading international Burns destination. David Hope-Jones OBE, CEO of the South of Scotland Destination Alliance, said: “This is a hugely important moment for Dumfries. There is no question that the town has one of the most powerful and authentic Burns stories anywhere in the world, but for too long we have not fully realised that potential. “This role is about making things happen. It is about driving projects forward, creating real change. Burns is a key figure in Scottish national identity, and this work will attract international attention, connecting people with place and instilling a sense of pride in the town. “With the right person in place, we have a real opportunity to transform Dumfries into a destination that people from around the world visit because of its connection to Robert Burns. Burns lived and walked here – he chose Dumfries and so will visitors.” A spokesperson for Dumfries and Galloway Council added: “Robert Burns is central to the identity of the town, but we know there is much more we can do to bring that story to life for both residents and visitors. This role will help us move from ideas to action, ensuring that the work of the Burns Tourism Partnership delivers real benefits for the town centre, local businesses and the wider community. “This is about building pride in place, strengthening our cultural identity and creating a more vibrant and welcoming Dumfries.” The role will be recruited in the coming months.
