Lotto lifeline for park

A GREEN space in Dumfries is to be transformed into a natural and rustic play area for kids, thanks to a £375k lotto grant.

Lincluden Community Centre have been successful in their application to the National Lottery Community Fund’s Our Place initiative to develop an area of open space in North West Dumfries known as Popeye’s Park.

In addition to new play equipment, there will be landscaping, tree planting, extra seating and the pond will be renovated in a bid to encourage children and families to spend time enjoying themselves in the landscape.

Lincluden Community Centre is leading the project on behalf of the community and will work closely with Dumfries and Galloway Council to a “Friends of Popeye’s Park” group.

Centre chairwoman Margaret Jardine said: “I’m over the moon. The community has been passionate for a long time about Popeye’s Park and have wanted to see it returned to a space where local people can meet and enjoy family time together.”

Community centre manager Lynn Uygun added: “This is fantastic news. We’ve listened to what the community have told us, and we are going to deliver them the most fabulous park.”

A meeting will take place at the centre on Monday night at 6 pm to which all residents are invited.
