Locals fight to save gallery
CASTLE Douglas residents are fighting to protect another asset in the town which is under threat of closure.
Community Council members are disappointed the art gallery, next door to the library, could be shut after 88 years.
It first opened in 1938 and was gifted to the town by artist Ethel Bristowe, along with some of her paintings. The building was updated in 1996 with lottery funding and now provides a venue for contemporary art and craft exhibitions.
However, the art gallery’s days could be numbered due to proposed budget cuts by Dumfries and Galloway Council.
Now, after more than 1000 people signed a petition calling for the council not to axe Castle Douglas Swimming Pool when making budget cuts, locals are determined to save the gallery too.
Tammie Kirk, of Castle Douglas Community Council, said this week: “The art gallery can be hired for just £20 per day, but is sadly under threat in the latest round of proposed council budget cuts – this is despite being a venue that was actually gifted to the town.
“It is clear that it is a beloved space by local artists, appreciated for its light, space, disabled access and nearby free parking."
It has a programme that runs from March to Christmas, showcasing group and individual works from across the region.
However, community councillors say it has not been well advertised, and admit there have been several issues when people have tried to hire the venue in the past.
Tammie added: “I personally believe that with a few tweaks to how the council manage and promote this venue, it could become a profit-making asset, rather than another loss to the community during budget cuts.
“There is strong public feeling that The Art Gallery should be saved.”
The council is set to reveal today its initial findings from the public budget consultation.
