AVERAGE life expectancy in Dumfries and Galloway is now at 81 and 77 years of age.

Girls born locally in 2024 can expect to live to 81 years and two months, while for baby boys it was 77 years and two months.

Also last year, men aged 65 could expect another 18 years and two months, while women of the same age had 20 more years and two months in front of them.

Meanwhile, life expectancy was highest in remote rural and accessible rural areas, and lowest in urban areas and remote small towns.

All the official figures for this region are in line with the national Scottish average.

But while life expectancy in Scotland has increased steadily for decades, it continues to be the lowest of all the UK countries.
