Interventions helped prevent 165 evictions
LAST ditch interventions by council officers helped to prevent 165 evictions in just nine months, it has been revealed.
Dumfries and Galloway is experiencing a housing emergency due to a severe shortage of homes, and there are hundreds of people presenting as homeless in the region every year.
With this in mind, councillors have requested to be updated on the number of successful interventions on tenancy evictions to prevent homelessness.
The latest figures have been compiled as part of a report for next Wednesday’s meeting of Nithsdale area committee.
It highlights the number of successful interventions by the welfare and housing options team on tenancy evictions to prevent homelessness
The report states: “For the period 01/04/2025 to 31/01/2026, the team prevented 165 cases progressing to eviction across the region, of which 89 cases are within Nithsdale – 54 percent of the total evictions prevented.
“This is a 11.5 percent increase on the same period last year.
“The team works closely with the housing options and homeless service within social work services, as well as housing providers and support organisations to ensure there is awareness of the services they offer.
“We continue to promote early intervention to support vulnerable customers but to also prevent cases escalating to crisis point and imminent evictions.”
