Inquiry date set in rider case

A PRELIMINARY Fatal Accident Inquiry is to be held next month into the death of a Dumfriesshire horse rider.

Natasha Galpin was thrown from a horse after it fell ill while she was riding at Iain Jardine Racing in Carrutherstown on January 15 last year.

Emergency services rushed the 22-year-old to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary and she was then transferred to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where she later died.

At the time, Iain Jardine issued a statement through the National Trainers Federation paying tribute to Natasha.

He said: “It is with great sadness that the Team at Iain Jardine Racing wish to report that we suffered a tragic accident on our grass gallops on Tuesday morning which has resulted in the untimely death of a member of our team, Natasha Galpin, 22, as well as the loss of a horse.

“Sadly, our horse suffered Gutteral Pouch Mycosis during work, resulting in the unavoidable and unpredictable accident.

“Our main priority throughout has been Natasha and the rest of our staff, who are distraught at the loss of a colleague and friend but have been extremely supportive of each other.

“Natasha was an experienced and valued, full-time member of Team Iain Jardine Racing. She was an accomplished event rider and ran her own livery yard.”

The hearing – which is mandatory due to Natasha’s death occurring at her employment – is due to take place at Dumfries Sheriff Court on September 21.
