Ian steps fundraising up a gear
OVER the last nine years Ian Baird has cycled 6100 miles and raised thousands of pounds for charities in Dumfries and Galloway.
Next month, to mark ten years of fundraising, the Kirkbean resident wants to give something back to his local communities, to thank them for their ‘unwavering’ support.
Retired groundworker Ian, 68, is preparing to cycle 6100 miles in 61 days – starting on June 1 – and raise £20k for Kirkbean and New Abbey Village Halls, Nith Inshore Rescue, and Dumfries Young Curlers.
Each day the keen cyclist will complete five laps of a 20 mile circuit around Kirkbean, Southerness, Carsethorn and New Abbey.
He hopes others will come out along the way and join in for a lap or two.
Last year Ian raised £5713 for the Oncology Unit at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary after completing a 36 hour ride.
Looking ahead to this year’s challenge, Ian said: “This year marks a significant milestone – my tenth year of charity cycling.
“Over the past nine years, I have dedicated myself to cycling an incredible 6100 miles for various charities, not including the countless training miles.
“This year, I am committed to doubling that effort by cycling 6100 miles in just 61 days – an ambitious goal of 100 miles per day on my 20-mile circular route, completing five laps daily for a total of 305 laps.” Ian added: “The unwavering support from my local communities over these years has been truly inspiring. “Now it is my turn to give back in a meaningful way. I am proud to cycle in support of Kirkbean and New Abbey Village Halls, Nith Inshore Rescue, and Dumfries Young Curlers. Every penny raised will be equally divided among these four wonderful causes.
“Starting June 1 and finishing July 31, this journey is not just about the miles but about making a real difference. “Our target is £20,000 – a goal that will empower these organisations to continue their vital work within our communities.”
Thanks are expressed to all who have supported Ian over the years and to Karen Love for organising raffles, fun nights and keeping everyone updated on social media.
